The first elevator was invented thousands of years ago in Ancient Greece in the form of simple mechanical devices. These early systems operated by winding ropes around a drum and lifting loads using human or animal power. Although these setups were not very safe, they were used for many years to transport goods.
With the start of the Industrial Revolution and the introduction of steam engines, steam power began to replace human or animal power in elevators. In these systems, the energy produced by the steam engine turned a drum, which pulled the elevator cabin via ropes wound around it. The first known steam-powered elevator in history was used in the United States to extract blocks of ice from the Hudson River, which forms the border between the states of New York and New Jersey. However, due to the high risk of rope breakage, these elevators were still not suitable for carrying people.
A major breakthrough came with the invention of the safety brake, which marked a turning point toward modern elevators. This innovation ushered in the era of safe elevators.
Elevators began to run on electricity in the 1880s. Electric-powered elevators could reach greater heights and move faster than their predecessors. In 1895, two British inventors developed a counterweight system that allowed electric elevators to carry heavier loads using less energy.
Technological advancements have continually influenced and transformed elevator systems. After electric elevators came automatic elevators, programmable control systems, solar-powered elevators, and even space elevators—the futuristic technology of tomorrow.
